There are different options depending on the situation. Sometimes you can do it yourself, while other times it may be faster to have someone else handle it for you. It’s also important to understand the difference between compensation and refund, as they are not the same thing. You may be entitled to one or the other, or even both, depending on the circumstances.
How to Claim TUI Compensation?
It all depends from the type of compensation TUI owes you.
Here are the most popular situations.
1. EU/UK Flight Compensation: TUI
1.1 Long Flight Delay
TUI delayed flight compensation:
- 3+ hour-long flight delay (delay time calculated upon arrival);
- It’s fault of TUI, not extraordinary circumstances (i.e., unavoidable events);
- Flight is to / from Europe (i.e., the EU, UK, EEA).

1.2 Flight Cancellation

- Last-minute cancellation (up to 14 days before the flight);
- It’s fault of TUI, not unavoidable events;
- Flight is to / from Europe.

1.3 Denied Boarding / Overbooking
TUI denied boarding compensation:
- Denied boarding due to overbooking (involuntary);
- It’s due to the fault of TUI, not due to expired passport, lack of visa or failure to comply with entry requirements;
- Flight is to / from Europe.
The steps are the same as with delays and cancellations. Fill in a compensation claim form on TUI’s website in order to make a claim. Refer to Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 and Regulation UK261 when making a claim.

1.4 Missed Connection Flight
If your flight is delayed or cancelled causing you to miss a connecting flight, you may be entitled to compensation under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 and the Regulation UK261. This applies to situations when you arrive at your destination 2-3 hours later than originally scheduled.
You can get compensation if:
- It’s fault of TUI, not something unavoidable (bad weather, security risks, etc.);
- Flight is to / from Europe.

1.5 Downgrading
In case you are involuntarily downgraded by your airline, you may be eligible for compensation. The compensation amount, which depends on the distance of your flight, ranges from 30 to 75% of the ticket price. This compensation should be paid right away.
If that hasn’t happened, make sure to contact TUI and file a claim.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to accept any TUI coupons or vouchers. In case of any issues, refer to Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 or the Regulation UK261. These two regulations give you these rights.

2. Baggage Compensation
When it comes to baggage, there are two options available.
You can either let your insurance company handle it or file a claim through TUI’s website. Please note that flight compensation companies usually do not handle these types of claims.
2.1 Damaged Baggage
What are the steps for filing a claim for damaged baggage?
Here they are:
- Within 7 days, file a damage report at the airport or through the online system;
- Provide all necessary information;
- Receive compensation of up to €1300.

2.2 Delayed Baggage
Here’s what to do if your baggage is delayed:
- Report the loss of your bag at the airport;
- If your bag isn’t located after 6 days, contact TUI;
- Claim reimbursement for the expenses incurred due to the delay, such as essential purchases.

2.3 Lost Baggage
Unfortunately, there are situations when a bag is lost (i.e., a bag never arrives).
Here’s what you should do if you experience lost baggage:
- Report the loss of your bag at the airport;
- If your bag isn’t located after 6 days, contact TUI;
- After 21 day provide a list of things you had in your bag, to receive compensation up to €1300. After 21 days a bag is considered lost, not just delayed.

3. TUI Refund For Cancellation
If TUI cancels a flight, you can get a refund.
This means you can get back the money you paid for your ticket. Depending on the circumstances, you may also be eligible for compensation in addition to the refund. To claim your refund and potential compensation, make sure to contact TUI. If needed, follow up after a couple of weeks (if there’s no reply from the airline).

3.1 What If You Cancel a TUI Flight?
If you cancel a TUI flight, the process is straightforward.
Start by cancelling your reservation; this can be done online via the TUI website or by contacting their customer service. After the cancellation, you need to submit a refund request. The refund amount will largely depend on the terms of your ticket fare.
Bear in mind that not all tickets are refundable. If you purchased a non-refundable ticket, you might not receive a refund, or significant cancellation charges may apply. It’s crucial to read and understand the fare rules prior to ticket purchase.
Note that while you may be eligible for a refund, you won’t get compensation for cancelling your own flight. Compensation under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 only applies when the flight is cancelled by the airline, not when the passenger chooses to cancel.
Therefore, while you may receive a refund for your ticket depending on fare conditions, you cannot receive compensation for flights cancelled by you.
Do Not Agree to TUI Vouchers
When you are entitled to European flight compensation or a refund from TUI, it’s important to remember that you are not obliged to accept TUI vouchers as a form of compensation. You have the right to demand a monetary refund instead.
When interacting with TUI customer service, always remember to cite Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 and state clearly that you refuse to accept vouchers as compensation. If the customer service representative does not offer a cash refund, request to speak to a supervisor or manager.
In fact – you are entitled to receive your compensation or refund from TUI without having to accept vouchers as payment.
Claiming TUI Flight Compensation On Your Own
Being persistent is crucial when it comes to flight compensation.
It’s important to be aware of your rights and not settle for anything less. TUI may try different tactics to avoid paying compensation, such as portraying issues worse than they are or claiming technical problems are unavoidable circumstances. Many airlines worldwide use these tactics, not just TUI.
In summary, to independently claim TUI flight compensation:
- Determine if you are entitled to compensation. Using EC Regulation No. 261/2004 as a guide, establish if your circumstance warrants either flight compensation or a refund.
- Retain all relevant documents. This includes boarding passes, tickets, receipts, and any other proof of your flight and its associated costs.

Court Action – TUI
In some cases court action may be necessary.
